Books: September 26th - 30th

Banned Book Week was celebrated this week in the United States. The books featured this week had, at one time, been challenged or banned as they were deemed inappropriate for school libraries.

The following novels were promoted on the television screens and are available in the school library:

This true account of a young Jewish girl who hid from the Nazi's during WWII was "too tragic" to read.

This satircal novel was banned because it "centered around negative activity".

This book chronicles one of the most severe child abuse cases in California history.

The following books were featured this week:

Terry Fox Fundraiser Begins

The students and staff of St. Mary High School are busy collecting donations for the Terry Fox Foundation. The library has numerous resources to inform the students about Terry Fox, the Marathon of Hope, his dream . . . and his courage . . . to never give up on a dream.

Scholastic Book Orders

Once again, the library staff is offering the opportunity for students and staff to purchase books, computer software, bookmarks and other supplies from Scholastic Canada.

The September Scholastic Book Order fliers are now available in the library. The orders are due by Wednesday, September 21st.

Come into the library and grab a flier! FALL into the habit of reading!

Help With Assignments

While the semester is only a few weeks old, students are already busy with their school assignments!

Many students visit the library to complete these assignments, seeking an available computer, reference material or a quiet place to concentrate.

The SMHS library also offers other materials to support students in completing their assignments in the library: calculators, protractors, rulers, felt markers, crayons, stencils, old magazines for cutting, and paper.

If you require additional materials, please let us know. We are here to help you succeed!

Every week the library staff features three books that are available in the library. These novels are displayed on the televisions in the commons, as well as on the Shelfari virtual bookshelf of this blog.

Giller Prize Longlist

The 2011 Scotiabank Giller Prize longlist has been announced!

Saskatchewan author, Guy Vanderhaeghe, has made the list for his novel, A Good Man.

International Literacy Day

Today is International Literacy Day!

International Literacy Day is celebrated around the world on September 8th with the goal of raising awareness about the importance of reading and writing skills. Literacy skills help us participate fully in families, in schools and in the community.

Participate in International Literacy Day by coming into the library and reading a newspaper, magazine or book!
